Candida is common but harmless yeast-like fungus that rarely causes problems for most men. Many men have it on their bodies without it bothering them. However, if your immune system is under pressure from stress, from your use of medications or from diseases such as HIV or diabetes, candida can become a problem. Candida can be transmitted during sex or through kissing.

Symptoms of candida

Candida usually appears on the mucous membranes inside your mouth, on your penis or inside your anus. A candida infection (candidiasis) has the following symptoms:

  • redness
  • itchiness
  • irritation
  • pain when peeing
  • scaly skin
  • red bumps or spots
  • whitish patches of "fur" that you can scrape away

Candida in combination with a weak immune system

Candida may present itself if your immune system is weaker, for example due to stress, disease or your use of certain medications. Candida is more common among men with HIV. Indeed, a candida infection in your mouth could even be a sign that you have HIV.
If you have HIV but you are not yet being treated with HIV medications, candida can give you more severe problems and will often last longer. By getting treated for HIV, you will strengthen your immune system and reduce any problems you might have with candida.

Treatment of candida

Candida only needs to be treated if it is causing problems for you. The treatment consists of applying a fungicidal cream or taking fungicidal pills. The more severe the symptoms are, the longer you may have to continue the treatment.

Transmission of candida

Even after a successful treatment, candida can still come back. Candida can be transmitted during sex or through kissing. Your sex partner can pass it on to you even if he doesn't have any symptoms at the time.

  • If you have symptoms, go to your family doctor or HIV internist.
  • If it turns out that you do have candida, get yourself tested for HIV and other STIs, too.
  • Using condoms when fucking will help prevent the spread of candida.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid sex while you are being treated for candida to give your mucous membranes a chance to recover.
