Condom allergy

Some people have an allergic reaction to the use of condoms or lube. They are physically allergic to a component of the condom such as latex or preservatives. The best solution is to choose condoms that are made of other materials such as polyurethane or polyisoprene and to try other kinds of lube.

Advice if you are allergic to latex

  • Avoid contact with latex if possible. You can buy various different types of “non-latex” condoms that are made of polyisoprene or polyurethane rather than latex.
  • Consult your doctor if you think you might be allergic to latex.

On the basis of lab tests, your doctor can diagnose whether or not you are allergic to latex. But remember that symptoms such as itching, red spots or bumps can also be caused by STIs. If you are in doubt, consult your doctor, but also get yourself tested for STIs and HIV.
