The risks involved in giving and getting blow jobs

You run no risk of getting HIV as long as you don't get any sperm in your mouth when you are giving a blow job. But you could still get STIs. Maintain good oral hygiene. If you give blow jobs without a condom, make sure you always also get tested for STIs in your mouth.

No risk of getting HIV as long as you don't get any sperm in your mouth

  • Getting precum in your mouth is not risky in terms of HIV. The amount of virus in precum (preseminal fluid) is very small and your mouth has a good defence system of its own.
  • If you have inflamed gums or a small wound in your mouth, you do run a risk, however. In that case, your mouth no longer forms an impenetrable natural barrier.
  • What if you get sperm in your mouth? In that case, you do run a risk.
  • You also run a risk of getting HIV if you swallow sperm.

Risks in terms of STIs

  • When giving blow jobs, you run a risk of getting syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia or Hepatitis B in your mouth or throat.
  • The same is true the other way around: you can get an STI if receive a blow job from someone who has syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia in his mouth or throat.
  • The longer someone gives you a blow job, the greater your chances of getting an STI if he has one.

Reduce the risk:

  • If you want to give blow jobs without running any risk of HIV, make sure you don't get any sperm in your mouth and that the inside of your mouth is not damaged.
  • If you do get sperm in your mouth, do not swallow it but spit it out immediately. Then rinse your mouth afterwards calmly and spit out the water.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Do not brush your teeth shortly before or shortly after oral sex. That will prevent minor damage to your gums. Use mouthwash for fresh breath or wait at least an hour after brushing your teeth before giving a blow job.
  • If you give blow jobs without a condom, make sure you always also get tested for STIs in your mouth.
  • If you want to reduce your chances of getting STIs and HIV as much as possible, use a condom each time you give a blow job.
