Bondage

Bondage is when you tie up your partner. Bondage is about control: by getting tied up, you surrender yourself to your sex partner.

If you are in the dominant role, you tie up your partner and can do things to your partner without him being able to stop you. If you take the submissive or passive role, you allow yourself to be tied up. The amount of control you surrender to your partner obviously depends on how much of your body is tied up and how tightly.

Materials for bondage

You can use various different materials for bondage: ropes, chains, handcuffs, belts and rubber or leather masks. The thinner the rope, the greater the chance that it will cut the skin. That's why it's smart to use rope that is not too thin, but also not too thick: in case of emergency you need to be able to cut through the rope quickly.

Tips for safe bondage

To keep bondage safe, keep in mind the following things:

  • Only let yourself be tied up by someone you trust.
  • Always remain nearby if you have tied someone up.
  • Always keep a knife of a pair of scissors nearby in case of emergency.
  • Agree on a safeword or safesign to be used to stop the bondage play at any time.
  • Never wrap rope around someone's neck: the risk of suffocation is too great.
  • Loosen the ropes if the skin swells up or turns white, blue or purple, as that can indicate problems with the circulation of blood.

Safeword or safesign

It is crucial to agree in advance on a safeword or safesign. The person who is tied up should only say the safeword if he really wants to stop. If his mouth is going to be held shut, he should use the safesign or gesture if he wants to stop. As the top or master, you must immediately respect the bottom's wish: stop with your play and release your partner from his bondage.

Suspension

Bondage involving someone hanging in the air is known as suspension. You can be hoisted up partially or completely. It requires technical knowledge and experience to practice suspension safely. You can read more about suspension on specialised bondage and fetish websites.
