When to test

When you should get tested for STIs and HIV depends on your particular situation. Getting tested is the only way to know for sure whether or not you have an STI or HIV.

If you have multiple sex partners, get tested for HIV and STIs at least once every half year. Get tested as soon as possible if you:

  • have physical symptoms that could point to an infection with an STI or HIV
  • have been notified by a sex partner that he has an STI or HIV. Also if you think he might have had an STI or HIV, get tested as soon as possible
  • think that you could have become infected with HIV. A standard test can show the presence of HIV in your blood within six weeks
